Couple Replaces Wedding Cake with Giant Tuna Fish

A company in Japan is taking the traditional wedding cake in a very different direction, replacing it with a giant tuna.

In a video on YouTube a Japanese couple cuts a 100 kilogram -- or about 220 pound -- BigEye tuna with a very large knife at their wedding reception.

From BIZBASH: What Las Vegas Event Pros are Working on This Season

With the unofficial end of summer now behind us (that would be Labor Day), event professionals are looking to the fall—a traditionally busy time—to see how the economic recovery will help the industry rebound from what has so far been a pretty slow year. We asked a group of local planners and vendors what they have in the works for the coming months. Here are some highlights.

"Baskow is very excited about the fall season. We have written 68 proposals in the past three weeks for September, October, November, and January events. We see the economy coming back strong. I recently booked two name celebrities for October events in Miami and four well-known speakers. People are also spending money again, starting to book Vegas venues and talent. This is the most exciting news for our economy." —Jaki Baskow, owner and C.E.O., Baskow & Associates

"People are calling me for private catering and booking events from Las Vegas to California. At Southern Wine and Spirits Las Vegas, sales were higher than expected for the Labor Day weekend. [We] anticipate that with the projected December 4 opening of the Mandarin Oriental, the first CityCenter tower to open, things will be on the rise. People from all over are eager to see what this project looks like. New restaurants and attractions are what drive people here. With all the excitement and buzz around this project, our local economy should take a step forward. People want to travel and get away—now is a great opportunity to do this. Room rates, packages, and shows are discounted to draw [convention, meeting, and event business, plus tourism] here." —Nick Lorenz, founder, Lorenz Catering, and executive chef, Southern Wine and Spirits For more, click here.

Concierges fill many roles

The concierge — literally "the keeper of the keys" in French — has been around since the Middle Ages, when the concierge did just that at the castles of royalty. These days, the concierge is the hotel employee who often sits at a desk in the lobby, available to make dinner reservations, book sightseeing tours and facilitate other activities for tourists.

But sometimes, they're called upon to do much more. More.

Outrageous Hotel Concierge Requests

Concierge comes from the French comte des cierges (“keeper of the candles”), servants who tended to traveling aristocrats in the castles of medieval France. Fortunately, today one need not be nobility or a millionaire to get a concierge to arrange the most dramatic requests. Full Article.

All You Need is Exposure - Market Your Wedding Planning Business

So you have all the necessary staff, equipment, technology, contact and resources already at your fingertips, but you need clientele to drive your up and coming wedding planning business. Exposure is a key component in any business, especially the multi-billion dollar wedding business. After all, it’s a once in a life time (or more than once for some) announcement to friends and family that the couple has found each other. They now need someone to make this moment memorable enough till death or other circumstances do them part.

Lay a good foundation!

Start with a snazzy slogan or a memorable jingle that catches people’s attention. Incorporate it onto your flashy website complete with touched-up photos and dreamy wedding tunes. Remember to stimulate the senses as much as possible so people can linger a bit longer at your site and come back to you when they have done their research. The more information you can provide on your website, the more engaging your wedding planning business will seem. It is an all-service business, so provide your recommendations when it comes to details like where to find gifts for bridesmaids, the perfect church for the ceremony, honey-moon destinations, catering services, tailors, makeup artists, photographers, salons, hotels, live bands, jewelers, etc. – the works! How to Have a Green Wedding

A 2009 David's Bridal Internet survey found that 45 percent of some 500 engaged or recently married women had considered some aspect of caring for the environment in their wedding planning decisions. This trend is going to continue to grow and although hard figures are difficult to find, evidence of the growth of green weddings can also be seen in the increasing availability of green wedding planners, caterers, limo drivers, florists, DJs, photographers, and honeymoon hotels and resorts.

Of the 2.5 million weddings that take place each year a small fraction can currently be considered green by virtue of the waste accumulated from just one wedding. What all green weddings typically share is an effort to conserve resources and reduce waste.

Production Priorities

Often event planners have a fairly consistent set of questions on their mind: I have a limited budget, yet I need AV — how do I set priorities in my budget? If I want lighting, sound, video, staging and decor, should I just give each part of the production a smaller piece to make sure I get some of everything?

STEP ONE: TALKING MONEY

When setting the budget for production, your first call should be to a producer or production manager you trust. You can also call two different production companies to get a good sense of what your money will get you.

In turn, the first things we will ask you are: “What is the event budget? How many people are coming? Where is it? Is there a theme?”

I realize that some planners are reluctant to get into budget discussions this early. But you absolutely need to. Why? Because some production companies specialize in large-scale events and some in intimate gatherings. Some do both and need to get a sense of which an event will be, whom to assign within their companies, and what resources to provide. More.

Concierge Services For Ordinary People

Concierge services are an indispensible part of life for many people. The tradition of the concierge goes back many centuries – in the Middle Ages, the concierge was an officer of the king, whose job it was to execute justice. The term originated from the French Comte des Cierges – the Keeper of the Candles. This functionary catered to the needs of visiting nobles to castles of the time.

In modern times, the term usually refers to an hotel employee who attends to the special needs of guests. These might include making travel arrangements, recommending restaurants and nightclubs, procuring tickets to events or arranging spa treatments. In luxury hotels, the concierge is expected to be able to deal with any request, no matter how bizarre.

The saying among concierges is, “The answer is yes. Now, what’s the question?”. More.

The Psychology of Color in Marketing

Different colors carry different psychological meanings and impacts. They can affect your mind and the way you think and feel.

With this in mind, you should choose the color for your logo, website and all of your marketing materials carefully. It has been my experience in Las Vegas that most small business and even medium-sized companies clearly don’t take this into account. In doing so, you’ll be able to keep ahead of your competition and look more professional and polished and you’ll be able to narrow down your choices for color much more easily.

So what do colors mean, both positively and negatively?

Blue

  • power and success
  • trustworthiness
  • peace and harmony
  • conservatism and idealism
  • reliable and stable
  • professionalism More.

Putting the Concierge to the Test

The Four Seasons resort in Maui is an exclusive vacation destination—the local saying, “Maui No Ka Oi” translates as “Maui is the best” and as such, guests expect a superlative level of service for the price they’re paying. Many of the concierges at the Four Seasons wear the cross key Clef d’Or (“gold key”) badge, the international concierge call sign for quality and professionalism.

According to Concierge Karen, a Clef d’Or member and concierge of 14 years, the most common requests are for dinner reservations, directions, diapers/formula, surf lessons, helicopter tours, and surprise arrangements for marriage proposals, birthdays and anniversary celebrations.

And then here are some unusual requests such as the man who called to ask, “I heard this really great song on the radio, can you tell me what it is?” They did.

Or there was the woman who wanted a boat escort while she swam between the islands of Maui and Lanai. And don’t forget the celebrity who turned up for a month with her children who needed home-schooling: The concierge organized their event schedule and was rewarded with a Gucci purse and wallet. Small, nimble conventions thrive as behemoths struggle

Small show operators who might have been overlooked during the boom time are now benefitting from the lower costs of space, hotel rooms and airfare that make Las Vegas a great venue.

Exhibitors are also enjoying that lighter attendance means a higher percentage of attendees are dedicated buyers, not sightseers. That means small exhibitors and small shows don't have to dedicate personnel to accommodate attendees who aren't serious about making deals. Link.

The Art of Butts in Chairs

Chris Brogan runs a series of conferences.

"Logistically, they require the same things most conferences run on: great speakers, relevant exhibitors and sponsors, and eager attendees. The goal is to get the right speakers to draw the right attendees who might also be of interest to the exhibitors and sponsors. It’s a kind of ecosystem. It’s also not exactly the easiest business in the world.
People don’t have a lot of budget to spend on attending events. Companies aren’t exactly sending them any more. It’s not all doom and gloom, but it does require more work than it used to, with regards to moving interested people from their office to my conference hall. " More.

The Hospitality Industry in Las Vegas Remains Strong

What do a wedding coordinator, a night club host, a security guard, and a front-desk agent have in common? They all work in the exciting fi eld integral to making Las Vegas what it is today – the hospitality capital of the world. And what an exciting time to be a part of this growing business, but not just in Las Vegas. While many U.S. employers are proceeding with caution when considering hiring new employees for fi rst quarter 2009, according to the results of the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, the leisure and hospitality industry sector anticipates increased hiring activity during the upcoming quarter and expects to boost staff levels compared to three months ago.

Certainly, one place within the hospitality industry that is seeing growth is right here in Las Vegas. With casino, resort, and mixed-use development construction projects nearing completion all along Las Vegas Boulevard, hiring for these new properties will soon be in full swing. If you have never worked in the hospitality industry, now might be the perfect time to start your career. The hospitality industry is critical to the infrastructure of our city.

According to the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, an estimated 37 million tourists visited Las Vegas in 2008. To serve these tourists, the Nevada Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation has identified more than 270,000 people working in the leisure and hospitality industry. More.
